Thomas Garnar

Thomas, the youngest child of Edward and Ann, was born on 12 March 1825 at Newington.

He married Rachel Shand in 1848.  They had no children, but seem to have virtually adopted Elizabeth Ann Stebbings, the daughter of Thomas' sister Mary Ann, who was living with them as early as 1861 when she was 10.   In 1861 they were living at Crown Hill, Lambeth and Thomas was described as a Leather Dresser and Japanner.

In 1871 they were at Knights Hill, Lambeth.  By 1881 Thomas had retired and was living at Norwood Villa, Foots Cray in Sidcup, Kent.  He died here in 1897 and Rachel died in 1907.  Thomas' niece Elizabeth continued to live in the same house until her own death in 1926.

Thomas went into business with his brother Martin (see Martin's page for more details) and sold out to his nephew James in 1871.

When he died in 1897, Thomas left an estate of £38,695.  All his nephews and nieces received £250 with the exception of Charles Stebbings (the son of his sister Mary Ann) and his brother Martin's daughter Alice, both of whom were still alive in 1897..  One wonders why they were left out!  Edgar and Florence Ivison, the children of his niece Mary Ann (who had already died) received £250 each, but all the other children of his nephews and nieces received £100 each.
